Your loved one may wish to age at home, but they might need extra help with daily activities that have become challenging. Whether your parent requires assistance preparing meals or your spouse can no longer bathe or dress independently, nonmedical in-home care is one option to consider. Nonmedical home care provides personal care for seniors who don’t require long-term medical assistance and want to maintain their independence as they age in place safely. Our care aides can offer you and your loved one support and peace of mind.

Activities of Daily Living Examples:

Here’s a standard list of activities of daily living, as outlined by the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living:

  • Bathing and showering — the ability to bathe and maintain personal hygiene

  • Continence — having complete control of the bowels and bladder

  • Dressing — the ability to select appropriate clothes and outerwear for the weather or occasion and get dressed independently

  • Mobility — the ability to walk or transfer from one place to another, specifically in and out of a bed or chair

  • Feeding (excluding meal preparation) — the ability to get food from plate to mouth and to chew and swallow

  • Toileting — the ability to get on and off the toilet and clean oneself without assistance

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Examples:

  • Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) require planning, problem-solving, and organizational skills. While ADLs are very fundamental, IADLs are skills that allow seniors to function independently and manage their own affairs. IADLs, as outlined by the Lawton-Brody scale, include the following:

  • Housekeeping and home maintenance — the ability to maintain a clean and safe home by mopping, doing laundry, or fixing minor things

  • Managing money — the ability to budget and pay bills on time

  • Managing medications — taking medications correctly and refilling them on time

  • Preparing meals — the ability to plan, cook, and serve one’s own meals

  • Shopping for groceries and other necessities — remembering to get all the things one needs to eat and live properly on time

  • Transportation — the ability to get around by driving oneself, arranging a pickup, or using public transportation

  • Using the phone or computer — the ability to answer phone calls, call others, or email others, if it’s something one has always done.

Infographic: What Level of Care Should You Be Researching?

It’s probably not a nursing home.  Point yourself in the right direction in terms of what level of senior care you might need.

As you get older, you might start to hear your doctor talk about senior living, or your daughter mention the perks of community living. If thinking about living in a nursing home has you looking for a way to chain yourself to your front porch, you’re not alone.

Many people believe that nursing homes are the only alternative living option for seniors. However, In Home Care includes everything from independent living and assisted living to memory care and respite care all with your private in-home caregiver.

You want it to be the “least restrictive setting” as possible. This term refers to the place where you maintain as much of your independence as possible.

For a while, this might be at your own home or at a senior community, when you no longer drive, perhaps in home living assistance offers outings and day trips that becomes the setting that allows you to maintain as much of your independence as possible.

In Home Living Assistance

The next level of care is receiving assistance with activities of daily living. Residents typically live in private homes, eat meals, and have no access to an activities calendar.

Silver Steps caters to a wide range of people. It is an ideal option for someone who is comfortable taking of themselves but also wants a more active life and appreciates medication reminders. It’s also right for those who require assistance with personal care, such as getting dressed and bathing or other personal hygiene assistance.

Services are personalized to meet individual needs, so residents remain as independent as possible with techniques and skills for as long as possible, yet they have access to care at a moment’s notice.

Memory Care

Many people with mild memory loss can thrive in home with centered care but when memory loss progresses, memory care becomes the next level of care. In Home Care is designed to meet the specific needs of individuals with memory loss. Residents may live in private home with a private caregiver to keep resident safe.

An ideal living option for those with memory loss who are prone have poor safety awareness, are experiencing declining in health. Our loved ones yearn for more one on one positive direction due to their memory loss.

Respite Care

Respite care is a form of care that allows caregivers to take a break from the daily care routine and recharge their batteries while ensuring their loved one receives the same high level of care they have been providing.

A respite offers the senior the opportunity to interact with a one-on-one caregiver; to spend time in a safe, supportive environment that they prefer; and to participate in activities centered and designed to match their abilities and needs.

If driving is no longer an option for your loved one, Silver Steps offers outings, transportation assistance, for groceries shopping, and Dr.'s appointments which become the setting of allowing as much independence as possible.

A Note on Nursing Homes

Wondering if you need a nursing home?

Nursing homes offer 24-hour nursing care, which more so resembles a hospital setting. Designed for those who have complex medical conditions who need skilled nursing care, they’re primarily caring facilities that also provide housing.

Some signs you do need nursing care include:

  • You need 24-hour medical care.

  • You require medical attention from a doctor or nurse on an ongoing basis.

  • You are bedridden or are not mobile.

  • You require rehabilitation after hospitalization or surgery.

It is sad when a person moves into an environment that is too restrictive too soon, causing them to lose years of independence unnecessarily. It is equally tragic when a person moves into a setting that is very unrestrictive yet incapable of meeting their increasing needs.

Ultimately, both of these scenarios result in multiple moves to different communities, which can be very stressful. That’s one reason why it’s beneficial to find senior in-home assistance, Silver Steps offers all levels of care. Residents can transition easily from one level of care to the next if their needs change. In Home Care will grow changes and or challenges.

The best way to determine what level of care you need is to undergo a care assessment. For a step in the right direction.

All inquiries are welcome.

We encourage you to explore the next Silver Step.
